|About This Event|
Voted Best Century THREE YEARS IN A ROW!
For the third year in a row, the Tehachapi GranFondo has been named Best Century by Cycle California! Magazine. Tehachapi’s two-day cycling event was selected by cyclists throughout the State and designated the winner just last week. “We’re so excited by the news!” exclaims event organization, Michelle Vance. As the City of Tehachapi’s Economic Development Coordinator, she couldn’t be more please with the results both in the award and the economic impact it has on Tehachapi.
There are over 100 Centuries and GranFondo’s that take place each year in California and the competition is tough. Our beautiful mountain community has to compete with popular beachside resort towns and well established wine regions and this is just proof that we can hold our own. So we thought it would be a good idea to question the events’ participants, read the Facebook comments and scan the feedback cards to see what everyone loves so much about the Tehachapi GranFondo and here’s what we found:
#1 – Roads & Traffic Control is Unbeatable!
If you’ve ever cycled other long distance events, you know how important the condition of the roads are. Loose gravel and potholes can lead to horrible outcomes and having to stop every few miles at a traffic light or stop sign can really ruin a ride. When we started to plan our event years ago, we visited and participated in nearly a half-dozen events similar to ours. Rotting road kill on the shoulders, twenty stop lights in one ride, and rough, patchy roads all left a mark on our minds (and our rumps!) It’s why we place a huge importance on road surfaces and right of way. With only ONE stop light on our 104 mile ride and all other stop signs manned by patrol officers, cyclists can enjoy recently swept roads and smooth courses.
#2 – Tehachapi is a Friendly Place
“I can’t believe how many people smiled, said hi to me and offered help” was the comment left on one feedback card and the sentiment shared by so many. As a small and tight-knit community, Tehachapi does have the reputation of being one of the friendliest towns in California. We’re never sure if it is the clean air, beautiful views or charming atmosphere that make everyone so happy to live up here. What we can say is that it’s a fresh experience for most any traveler which is why so many return regularly.
#3 – Extremely Affordable with Great Value
The custom event jersey continues to be one of the most appreciated souvenirs of the event. Yes, they love the swag bags, cool finisher’s medal, free lunch and affordable overnight accommodations. But it is the well-constructed jersey that surprises most participants. Our jerseys are custom designed for our event each year and are manufactured by Italian cycling apparel masters, Biemme. We love using them and getting great upgrades like compression sleeves and side panels, full zipper and silicon elastic. They truly will become one of your favorite cycling jerseys.
Registration for the 2017 Tehachapi GranFondo presented by Kaiser Permanente to be held September 16th starts on February 1st and typically sells out. This year there are five courses to choose from ranging from the 104 mile GranFondo ($125) to the 18 mile FunFondo ($45). Each registrant receives a custom jersey or tech-tee, swag bag filled with goodies, rest-stops providing healthy snacks and hydration, roaming SAG vehicles and a lunch at the festival upon their return. To register, visit TehachapiGranFondo.com or cal Michelle Vance at (661) 822-2200 ext 121.
